My 6 year old keeps saying his face is weird

Child 4-9 Years

My 6 year old son keeps saying his face is “weird”, and how everyone else has a normal face except him.

The first time he mentioned this I immediately said “your face is perfect! You’re handsome, there is nothing wrong with your face.” I immediately realized that wasn’t going to help. So I tried to recover with “I’ve looked in the mirror and felt that way too. It’s not a happy feeling. I’m sorry you’re feeling that way.”

It don’t go as smooth as I wanted, so the next time it came up I reiterated that I’ve felt that way, and I asked if someone was saying this to him or if he heard it somewhere, to rule out bullying. He said no one has said it to him it’s his own thoughts.

He is really going through it. He also will only wear maybe 3 shirts of his that “don’t look stupid” on him. He seems so young to be feeling this way. I’m not sure what’s going on. I’m pretty sure no one is telling him these things. I’m involved and volunteer at his school, I’m friends with his teacher, my husband and I never talk like this about ourselves or others. He has a million friends and good family support.

I don’t really know where to go from here, I’ve stated trying to focus on inside talents when we chat. “You have a super power of being kind, as a result you have lots of buddies. You work so hard at school, and you’re reading so well now. You are so thoughtful and silly, I love to be around you”. Other than mention I’ve felt that way and for what it’s worth I think he is perfectly handsome and trying to focus on the inside things that are beautiful about him, any advice? Thanks!
