Tinnitus induced due to Q Tip incident, visited doctors and ENT
I'm 36M, male, 179 pounds, no medications, supplements include creatine, multivitamins, live in Detroit. healthy and generally fit. On January 2nd 2026, I used a Q tip to clean my ear, I was definitely too aggressive with it (dumb mistake), and I believe this is when I hurt my ear, there was no pain as such, but a few minutes later tinnitus started in my left ear. Had to travel for work after (flights, loud noises) and it got worse.
Symptoms - tinnitus, feeling of ear being plugged, no pain, no dizziness.
- GP -- Doctor visit 1 - Doctor think its an ear infection and prescribes amoxicillin 850mg for one week. Didn't improve much.
- GP -- Doctor visit 2 -Examines ear, suggests using flonase (didn't help)
- Finally I booked an appointment with an ENT on February 3rd 2026, they did tympanometry, hearing test (standard) and a visual exam of both ears, throat, at this time my symptoms had actually improved as I strictly decided to *do nothing* for the past 5 days, no touching the ear, no exercises, no flonase, nothing.
- ENT didn't really provide much insight.
- For about a few days after, my symptoms continued to remain very low, until 02/12/2026, when I was using airpods for a company meeting.
Questions -- any theories on what is going on here? and what if anything I can do next? Kind of helpless, so seeking some input here. Is it nerve related? what are timelines of seeing improvement overall?
