I had an idea bouncing around in my head. Basically, what if those "custody battle/family reunited" stories didn't end happily, but instead was made into a into a more elaborate character study?
This idea came to me after watching that one Chicago Med episode. It's been bouncing around ever since: the child/ren are discovered to either not be their parent's biological child or some other group whom they've never met gets involved (like the ICWA for example), and forces the child to be placed in a family they never knew existed, never met in their lives or want nothing to do with. Normally, this plays out as a drama with happy endings (relatively), but, call it cynical, what if instead of accepting the new/bio family, they vehementaly reject them with all their will? Basically think "The Deep End of the Ocean" or "Losing Isaiah", or even the "Bring Lexi Home" case, but instead of them accepting their new families and communities, they become an "outcast by choice".
Kind of an "edgy idea", but I think it'd be an interesting character study as we follow the grown up character in their older years, seeing how that decision and their methods of distancing alienated them from both families and a lot of the people in their life, and how it shaped them into the individuals they are now... And how they grow out of that mindset/shell and start rebuilding the life they basically destroyed themselves. IDK, it's just an idea and I'd like to know what other people think?
