The Energy Equation: What Burnout Actually Is

Burnout isn't about hating your job. You can burn out of a job you love.

Burnout is simpler and more brutal than that. It's about energy. When the energy required to do something chronically exceeds the energy you get back from doing it, you deplete. The juice isn't worth the squeeze.

At first, you can recover day to day. Then you need the weekend. Then the weekend isn't enough. You rest all day Saturday, do nothing Sunday, and Monday morning you're still depleted—starting the week already behind.

This is different from job dissatisfaction. You can be passionate about the work, believe in the mission, be good at what you do—and still burn out. Because burnout isn't about whether something is good or bad. It's about whether the math works.

This is Part 1 of a 5-part series on burnout—what it is, how it accumulates, and what you can do about it.

Key insight: The awareness of burnout is the awareness of long-term trends. Not whether you had a bad week, but where the trend line is actually pointing over months and years.
