I like the darker side of Star Trek, and I don't think all the hate is justified
Not much else to add to the title. My mom convinced me to finally partake in "new trek" and I actually find that I love it.
The "utopian" future concept that people seem to being up as being the reason they hate the new shows, and the difference in writing quality I have not seen yet personally. I know it's "in" to hate on every new piece of media that drops, but I just don't. Trek has always laid the groundwork for the dark, corrupt, and ultimately anti-utopian underpinnings of Federal society, and I'm very glad to have shows that explore that on a deeper level. Yes, it's not optimistic like Trek should be, but it lays a foundation for that optimism in other shows. It shows that, of course the society that underlines it all is not perfect. But it also shows that unless you continue the struggle to maintain and better your society, you will lose what is excellent about it in the first place.
I love the exploration of the Federation's values and holding them accountable when they don't adhere to them, and the clear and obvious war within the Federation to maintain their values or to excise their ultimate power.
