Best strategy for early bind fishing?

Set an A2 prayer merc with a weak insight and good armor, so you can just throw chains while he pokey pokes without killing stuff, and consume whatever doesn't have the aura you want?

Or is there a better strategy, before you're ready to hunt down your forever-lancer?
