can i blame the rotten wood i used for the snapping twice?
hi im new to making my first wooden bow.
it was a dead fall smooth barked tree. so i know it wasnt pine. rotten on the floor for multiple months probably.but it was very rotten in some parts. other parts pretty hard still. there was brown spots that carves away like dust. and other parts are still hard wood.
well it was 5ft tall. then snapped under a massive knot. but the draw felt like 70lb bow and i kept yanking at it. and it snapped so fast at my arm i thought i may be bleeding after it but i was totally fine. i recommend glasses and maybe a hoodie.
ok heres the thing. then i made it like 4ft. tried to thin it out as much as possible. after i pull it like 5 inches it snaps again. but there was no real knots here or rot. the wood was hard here.
inside the snap cross section there is a little beetle tunnel. but then again the wood felt decent. maybe bacteria broke it down that i didnt see? do you think its the wood type or the rot/weathering that did this?
it just felt like something was wrong internally here. like this wood feels like legos. every two inches is just a lego peice. has anyone been sucessful in this type of situaiton?
ye next time ill try to get a nice piece that is semi fresh. maybe contact the firewood-lumber people around my city. cause
