Painful lump under old scar on hand 9 years after car accident, possible retained glass?
About 9 years ago, I was in a severe car accident where the windshield shattered and I had multiple cuts with glass embedded in my skin. I was hospitalized for several weeks and assumed all the glass was removed during treatment.
Recently, I’ve noticed a small lump under one of the scars on the back of my hand. It is not constantly painful. I cannot feel it at all unless it is touched, but when I press on it or accidentally knock it against something, it is extremely painful. Because it is on the back of my hand, I keep hitting it unintentionally and it bruises very quickly afterward.
The lump feels small and localized beneath the scar. There is no constant throbbing pain, redness, or visible swelling beyond the lump itself.
Is it possible for a small piece of windshield glass to remain embedded for this long without causing symptoms until now? Or is it more likely to be something like scar tissue, a cyst, or another type of growth?
Is this something I should have evaluated and possibly removed, or is it safe to leave alone if it only hurts when touched? I don’t want to waste doctor’s time if this isn’t something I need to have removed.
Thank you for any insight.
