Looking for Event + Passing Network Data (xG + Pass Sequences) for Master’s Dissertation

Hi everyone,

I’m currently writing my Master’s dissertation, and my research focuses on the relationship between passing networks and expected goals (xG) in football.

To conduct this research, I need detailed match event data, specifically:

  • xG data for shots during matches
  • Complete passing data (who passed to whom, minute of the pass, etc.)

Ideally, I’m looking for recent seasons from top 5 European leagues or major tournaments (e.g., UCL or World Cup). I’ve explored open-access datasets from StatsBomb and Wyscout on GitHub. However, I’m running into a few issues:

  • The available data is often older seasons.

  • In the case of StatsBomb GitHub, the data is spread across multiple folders and files, and I’m finding it difficult to extract data for a specific team or season efficiently.

    ● Is there a better way to query or structure this data from GitHub? ● Are there tools or scripts people recommend for filtering by team/season?

  • Are there other data providers that offer: ● Free access to recent event-level data? ● Academic discounts? ● Affordable short-term access for research purposes?

I’d really appreciate any guidance, recommendations, or advice from those who’ve worked on similar projects.

Thanks in advance!
