Non-verbal and semi-verbal people giving sign names
I'm hoh and have recently been havjng discussions with other deaf and hoh people about sign names. I know the basics but I want to discuss more.
I've been talking to a deaf person who is insisting that sign names can only be given by deaf people. That is completely fair. But I do wonder about semi/completely nonverbal people, if they use sign language consistently, are they allowed to give someone a sign name. I assumed it would be okay as it's their language aswell, surelyif you have to use the language you can give people their sign names, no?. But the person I'm talking to is insistent on sign names only coming from culturallye deaf people. When I asked them about it they just kept saying people that aren't deaf can't give names.
Am I in the wrong for assuming people who rely on signing but aren't hoh/deaf can give sign names?
