Max traditional & outside Roth?

I (44) live in a state with a 4.25% state income tax, along with a 1% city income tax. I currently split my TSP contributions right around 60/40 Roth/traditional. I max it each year.

Doing my taxes this year and cringing at how much gets carved out before I can do anything with it.

I worked up to max traditional and have been slowly converting my traditional contributions to Roth each time we get a cola or I get a step. I’m now debating changing strategy, going 100% traditional TSP and funneling all of the tax savings into helping max a separate Roth. Am I missing an obvious reason why this would be a bad approach as opposed to continuing towards maxing Roth TSP instead?

Note - I know there is no crystal ball to predict the future with. But given current rules, does it make sense?
