Support OCI Rework Proposal & Test
Some ship support abilities are unquestionably extremely powerful, i.e. Supply Drop (and I've had enough people write pages at me on how good Laser Turrets are that I've come around on it as well)
Some are very disappointing, like the Ion Cannon. Damage OCIs in general are difficult to land due to their delay. Limited use further constrains their utility compared to investing in strategic OCIs like WOO, Fixer or Automated/AI logistics & supply... What do? How to buff without breaking? How to address balance/lore/realism?
IMHO battlefield support should fall into three categories:
-
Instantaneous Limited Effects
-
Short Delay Tactical Shaping
-
Long Delay Battlefield Tilting
This also has to make sense; a Mach >10 missile would take ~2 minutes to transit from low orbit to surface, a delicate package of Laser Turrets or ATGM refills would need slowdown methods to survive impact and therefore take even longer to transit, while a near-lightspeed particle beam or a dropship loitering overhead could respond almost instantly.
Thus in my mod I've reworked a few of the OCIs as follows:
| Support Type | Usecount | Delay | Comments |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dropship Minigun Strafe | 1 | 1 -> 0 | Loitering Close Air Support |
| Dropship Rocket Run | 1 | 1 -> 0 | - |
| Impetus Ion Cannon | 1 | 2 -> 0 | Superweapon, OCI 200 -> 300 |
| Impetus Missile Strike | 1 -> 3 | 1 | Adhoc conversion of AShM |
| Impetus Smoke Strike | 1 -> 3 | 1 | - |
| Impetus Mine Drop | 3 -> 5 | 1 -> 1.5 | Orbital FASCAM |
| Impetus Turret Drop | 1 | 1 -> 2 | Nerfed |
| Impetus Supply Drop | 2 | 1 -> 2 | - |
Other changes:
- Patch 0.6.7 appears to have rebalanced Suppression. As such I've adjusted armor suppression resistance factor.
