Tito Valentin, Tito Gomez, Y El Grupo Aji Bravo - Pepe Juan [Puerto Rico, Psychedelic Jibaro] (1979)

Coming from someone who is Boricua and has been exposed to this all their life, Jibaro (native Puerto Rican folk music) tends to play it pretty close to the chest. That's intentional. It's a form of preservation, of a way of life that's largely been forgotten. I'm not throwing shade at the genre, it's music I love and hold near and dear to my heart. But it's not particularly known for trying new things. Not that that's a bad thing.

That's why the baroque experimentation and psychedelia are part of what makes this stand out. For the genre it gets wild, with organs, keys, bells ringing the death knell of its main character, Serge Gainsbourg-esque vocal overdubs, more reminiscent of the kind of pop psychedelic stuff you'd expect to hear from folks like Jean Claude Vannier, or Scott Walker (though not as croony). But analysis aside, I think it's just such a good song, moody, atmospheric, catchy, with lovely baroque melodies and production. Hope you enjoy.
