Can I say I have Asperger’s?
Hello all! I was recently diagnosed with autism, after a months-long comprehensive assessment. I didn’t expect to be diagnosed with autism, but here we are. I’m 20 so late diagnosed, but I grew up as a foreigner in a rural part of the country and my folks were anti psychological stuff. If any of that is relevant.
I was specifically diagnosed with “autism spectrum disorder, Level 1, requiring support, without accompanying intellectual or language impairment.” A bit of a mouthful. I know this used to be called Asperger’s, and I wanted to know if, despite being late diagnosed, it would still be okay to use that term?
The reason why is because it very accurately describes my history and symptoms. At first, the autism diagnosis didn’t make much sense to me, since I only really knew about autism through moderate or severe examples. However, after looking into Asperger’s, it all makes sense. Even the little things like my motor delay, walking patterns, and the like.
I know the term was professionally retired and I understand why the name itself is no longer in use. Personally, and I mean no disrespect to anyone, but I think they should’ve renamed it. I think it will help relevant people better understand what I’m dealing with than a term as broad as “autism”. Like I see it as a more specific term.
TDLR: Can I, a late diagnosed autistic person with no intellectual or verbal delays, say I have Asperger’s in order to better communicate my specific symptoms?
