Is bottled water cost effective?

Just getting in to prepping/preparedness and my go to thought was buying enough cases of water for our stockpile. My storage room is an upstairs, carpeted bedroom. A barrel/drum of water in a 2nd floor bedroom is a little worrisome just in case something does happen to it but open to hearing suggestions. I will also be getting water purification devices as well.
