Fiancé is unsure about kids, how should I handle this?
My fiancé (28m) and I (26f) are getting married in a few months and the conversation about having kids has come up a lot recently.
We have been together for almost 7 years and have grown up a lot together. The conversation about kids never really came up when we were dating (just wasn’t something on our minds with school and the start of our careers). Now after getting engaged and settling down (bought a house and both have full time jobs) it has started to come up a lot. I would really like to have kids, and my fiancé is unsure. He will barely talk about it most of the time, but will sometimes contribute to talking about the future with kids unprompted (setting up bedrooms in our house, making a rec room in the basement etc.).
He will listen when I talk about it, he just won’t contribute much if at all and gets upset if I talk about the idea too much.
He is a person who takes a while to come around to things, he needs time to process how he feels about things and he has said that is how he feels about kids. He’s anxious about coming around to the idea right away because he doesn’t want to give up his freedom (time and financial) just yet.
I totally respect how he feels and agree that kids won’t be for a couple years until we are more ready but I am afraid that this is his way of softly telling me he won’t want kids in the future.
What is the best way to handle this as it is important decision to be on the same page on but he really won’t engage in a conversation.
