Maybe I’m too woke, but who else noticed this about Series 1 & 2 (2005/06)?
I’m re-bingeing Doctor Who (2005/06) and I noticed something that will probably get me labelled “woke.” Don’t blame me, blame the media for keeping this stuff in my head 24/7. (In fact, I’m politically centre-right so I’m not easily convinced by these agendas). Give me an opportunity to break this down altogether.
So here’s my point: the Doctor ends up splitting both Rose and Donna from their romantic partners, and it feels like the Series 1–2 writing is subtly anti–“interracial relationships”. To me, the scripts subliminally implied that neither Rose nor Donna were ever truly “suited” for Mickey or Lance.
Before anyone jumps in: I’m not saying this is a confirmed intention, and I’m not claiming I can read the writers’ minds. I’m saying the pattern on screen is hard to ignore:
\- With Mickey, he’s repeatedly framed as inadequate, disposable, or “left behind,” while Rose’s bond with the Doctor is elevated as the real emotional centre.
\- With Lance, the story doesn’t just end the relationship — it turns him into a literal villain, which retroactively makes Donna’s relationship look like a mistake from the start.
The end result (whether deliberate or not) is that both relationships get undermined in a way that clears the path for the Doctor to be the central pull, and it also happens to remove the two partners who represent interracial pairings.
The only two companions in relationships at the time the Doctor intervened.
The fact the first two companions of the 2005 reboot were dating black men threw me off, I may have subconsciously noticed it when watching it as a kid, because I do remember finding IRs inappropriate around that time. Did the franchise make me associate interracial relationships with sci-fi chaos???
Am I the only one who noticed this, or does anyone else think there’s something going on in how those relationships were written in 2005/06?
