Founder salary benchmarks for 2026
I've seen this question come up a lot, and most answers are "it depends" or based on vibes. So I looked into actual payroll data.
Average founder salary by stage:
| Funding Stage | Average Salary |
|---|---|
| Seed | $147,000 |
| Series A | $203,000 |
| Series B | $214,000 |
By role:
| Role | Average Salary |
|---|---|
| CPO | $149,000 |
| COO | $135,000 |
| CTO | $134,000 |
What investors actually care about:
Your salary is a signal. Too high = treating VC money as lifestyle subsidy. Too low/zero = burnout risk.
Red flags:
- Taking 8-10%+ of the raise as salary (keep total founder comp under 5-8% of annual burn at seed)
- Doubling salary right after closing without milestones
- Taking $0 as a "commitment flex" (investors read this as poor planning)
Quick framework:
- Start with benchmark for your stage
- Adjust down 10-15% if you're CTO not CEO
- Sanity check: total founder comp under 5-8% of burn at seed, under 10% at Series A
- Have the comp conversation with co-founders before closing
TL;DR: Seed = ~$147K, Series A = ~$203K, Series B = ~$214K. Stay under 5-8% of burn. Don't take $0 thinking it impresses investors.
