Santa Fe Cinema Scene - Surprisingly, It's Growing
Any other moviegoers in this town? Remember movies? Like, in cinemas? :-)
Haven't seen any mention of this in here so thought I'd open a topic regarding what's happening movie-wise in Santa Fe.
Recently, the former Regal 14 Cinemas on Cerrillos at Zafarano, which had closed during peak COVID, re-opened as the EVO Cinemas, and they're now showing movies. It's what they're calling a "soft launch" as there is still no sign on the building, so from Cerrillos you'd never know the cinema is back in operation. But the best part is a) no crowds, and b) cheap movie tickets. It's worth checking out. (IMHO, the heist flick CRIME 101 is worth a look.)
Meanwhile, things are about to heat up with another new cinema opening: the Sky Cinema Midtown, on the old campus of the Santa Fe University of Art And Design. Sky, which runs the old Violet Crown turned Sky Cinemas at the Railyard, has completely remodeled the building that used to be home to The SCREEN, and they're just about finished with their extensive updates to that cinema. I got a tour recently and was excited to see that it's going to features new stadium seating like Sky Cinemas, and the auditorium still retains the gorgeous, huge, curved screen that made The SCREEN famous. They've also installed a brand-new 4K projector. I'm hoping they show PROJECT HAIL MARY there in March when that blockbuster opens. There will also be an intimate second cinema with seating for like 25, and a third, flexible space for live performances. Plus, food and drinks. Across the street a new pizza oven restaurant is going to open, which was a welcome surprise.
The CCA meanwhile keeps plugging away showing all kinds of movies -- let's hope that continues for a long time.
Just when it was starting to look kind of bleak in Santa Fe a year or two ago in terms of movies availability, 2026 is already turning things around for the better. See you at the movies!
