Is your data really safe from US jurisdiction? If you’re hosting on AWS, Azure, or GCP - the true answer is no. 🛑

For Canadian and international businesses, specially SMEs, the US CLOUD Act is a growing concern. If you use a US cloud provider, your data is legally subject to US jurisdiction, even if it physically sits in a Toronto or Montreal datacenter.

Add in the unpredictable costs of AWS/GCP/Azure and egress fees, and many smaller startups and SMEs are feeling the need.

Recently, I architected a "Hybrid Sovereign Cloud" stack. It is 100% immune to US data jurisdiction, fully equipped for building AI Agents, and costs under $75 CAD / month to run in production for moderate load.

Here is the exact blueprint to build your own private cloud:

📍 The Foundation: Sovereign Infrastructure
Instead of AWS, we used a VPS provider with datacenter in Beauharnois, Quebec. This way your data is physically in Canada and legally shielded from the US CLOUD Act.

🛠 The Control Plane: Coolify
SMEs don't have time for manual sysadmin work. By installing Coolify (a free, open-source PaaS) on an the VPS, you turn a raw server into your own private cloud. We automated Git deployments, auto-renewing SSLs, and 1-click infrastructure. Zero terminal headaches.

🧠 The AI & Auth Engine: PostgreSQL + pgvector
If you are building AI agents, you need a vector database. Instead of paying for a SaaS vector DB, we run a single PostgreSQL container with the pgvector extension. So our one highly-efficient database handles both our enterprise-grade User Authentication (via Keycloak) AND our AI embeddings.

📦 The Core App Data: Managed MongoDB
To use a noSQL without the maintenance burden, we use the VPS Provider's native Managed MongoDB cluster. It is said to be high availability and automated patching without the AWS kind of price tag.

🗄 Storage & Queues: S3 & RabbitMQ
Our VPS provider had S3-compatible Object Storage. It required zero code changes from AWS S3, but comes with $0 egress fees and $0 API call fees. For the Queues, we used a Dockerized RabbitMQ instance to handle async AI tasks efficiently.

💡 The Financial Reality
My estimate that a setup like this on AWS/GCP/Azure could scale into the thousands as your traffic and AI workloads grow (especially with bandwidth egress). By leveraging VPSs, an open-source PaaS like Coolify, and targeted managed database services, a bootstrapper or SME can run this entire enterprise-grade, AI-ready stack for roughly $70 CAD a month. Fixed. Predictable. Sovereign.

Personally I think cloud lock-in is a choice. You don't have to sacrifice modern developer experience to achieve data sovereignty and profitability.
