hydrodistention cystoscopy (?) as a child that was very painful

Physician Responded

When I was 8 years old, I started peeing blood. I had a ton of doctors visits after I told my parents . I had to have pelvic exams and other uncomfortable procedures, the worst being one where I was in a dark room, and the nurses had to insert a catheter like thing inside me to fill my bladder with some fluid. They watched my bladder on a screen and I remember being in so much pain and trying not to cry.

I don’t remember exactly what the cause ended up being but I think it was a kidney infection. What was the name of this procedure? A cystoscopy? When I googled it, it seems like sedation or anesthesia is given. If I had this procedure why was it done without it?
