How to ask my psychiatrist for a higher dosage

General Question/Discussion

Hi all! Little history of me and my diagnosis:

Currently 26 years old but was first prescribed vyvanse when I was in the 6th grade all throughout high school. I don’t remember my dosages then since it was so long ago but

remember in high school it made me sad so I stopped taking it after I graduated.

Fast forward about two years later when I’m 19, I’m going to college and working a job and missed how focused I could be when on my meds. Got back on it and found that 30mg was my sweet spot at that age while I also weighed my lowest around 130lbs. It no longer made me feel sad and actually helped with my depression and anxiety since I felt more “normal” and proactive while getting multiple things done during the day! Then when I was 22 I moved out of state so I was no longer covered on my parents medicaid and my script was too much to pay out of pocket at the time so I stopped again.

Fast forward to today- I’m 26 and got a career with great health insurance so wanted to get back on meds again because once again- I missed how it helped me feel more like a normal person. It truly does help me just get out bed, focus on one task at a time making sure it’s done correctly instead of trying to multiple things at once, motivates me to keep moving (I started working out again as a result) and so many other things I’m sure you all experience while on your meds as well!

Anyways the psychiatrist I’m seeing is aware of my history on it from a very young age but still started me out on 10mg since it’s been awhile since I’ve taken it, did a 2 week trial and upped me to 20mg because 10 didn’t do anything for me. 20 helped for a few days then the side affects completely disappeared so upped to 30mg, which I felt hopeful for since that used to be my sweet spot 6 years ago, but after about a week or so on that the same thing happened. I’m not sure since I’m older and weigh more (180) if my body just metabolizes it differently now?? But I became super frustrated since I was taking the meds and nothing was happening- since I know how productive I am when on it which is what I want so I started double dosing my 30s making my dose 60mg every day.

Wow!!! What a GD difference!!! I can take this dose everyday for the past 3 weeks and each time I am proactive, focused, happy, and getting shit done! The feeling hasn’t worn off like the other low dosages have.

My only concern is I’m not sure how to tell my psychiatrist I started doing this and if she jump me from 30 to 60mg so I don’t have to take double which limits my monthly supply. Each time we’ve upped the dosage it’s only been +10mg so I don’t want to continue down the slow path of working my way up to 60 but am concerned for how she may react to knowing I’ve been double dosing and then potentially just take me off of it completely for thinking I may be misusing it? Last time she also mentioned maybe eventually trying other meds like Adderall or Ritalin but I really love how I feel on vyvanse when I’m on the proper dose and dont want to waste time experimenting with other things.

Anyone have any experience with this or any advice? TIA!!!
