AITJ for refusing a leadership promotion because it's more work for less money overall?
I (26F) work at midsized company and have been her for about three years. I'm currently a regular employee on a performance base incentive structure. Basically, I have a base salary plus commissions and bonuses tied to output. if I hit my targets, I make pretty good money. Some months I even out earn a few of the team leads.
Last week, my manager called me into a meeting and offered me a “leadership promotion.” On paper, it sounds great. New title, more responsibility, I’d be managing 6–8 people, handling reports, approving leave requests, dealing with client escalations, and attending extra meetings.
The catch? The pay structure changes.
As a team lead, I’d get a slightly higher base salary but I would no longer qualify for the same performance incentives I currently get. Leaders get a small quarterly bonus, but it’s capped and significantly lower than what I can earn now if I perform well.
I actually did the math. If I continue as a regular employee and keep hitting my usual targets, I’ll likely make more than I would as a leader. Plus, I’d have less stress and no direct reports.
When I told my manager I wasn’t comfortable accepting the promotion, he looked surprised and said I was “not thinking long-term.” He said leadership roles open doors for future advancement and that I should be grateful I was considered.
Now some coworkers are saying I’m crazy for turning it down and that people would kill for that opportunity. One even implied I lack ambition.
But from my perspective, it feels like more workload, more accountability, more stress, and less earning potential right now. I’m not against growth, but I don’t want a shiny title if it means burnout and a pay cut in disguise.
AITJ for refusing the promotion because financially and mentally it doesn’t make sense for me?
