Having a paid choir - is it worth the money?
Some context.... for many years, my church has had a more-than-decent choir, capable of doing choral evensong and advanced Anglican anthems, and, except for an occasional re-enforcement for big services, all volunteer. However, in recent years our ranks have shrunk dramatically. People have moved away, died, or just not returned after COVID. The future does not look promising because of as more members are planning to move away within the next year or two and because many of us are just old. Unless we are able to recruit new, younger members, the choir as it has been will just not exist. The church has begun early discussions about spending resources to hire regular, paid, section leads. As a church, we are not super wealthy but neither are we cash-strapped. It really comes down to priorities. I know there are quite a few churches that do this. For those that do, are there tangible benefits to the church beyond simply having better music during the service? Does it lead to an increase in pledging members or ASA? Would love to here of others experiences.
