Thoughts on the “ village” and current lack of parenting
Just as a heads up I am not children. I hope to marry and have kids one day. I realize you have your reasons for not wanting children. Although I don’t come to your conclusion I respect your rights and reasoning to your own life choice.
One thing I’ve noticed a lot of from young parents my age is how much they seem to lack a “ village” that is basically other people helping you with your kids… and how really poorly behave a lot of their kids are.
It seems there is a collective amnesia among our Society about how parenting used to be . Say what you want about the boomers but they seem better parents than todays group. If for now other reason than they had some standards for their kids at some level ( yes even the toddlers) and had limits on them and imposed consequences.
Todays parents generally don’t really do that at all. It’s true that society had lost the village ethos. Back in the day having aunts and uncles and an involved grandma were sadly more normal than it is now. But part of having the village was that the kids and parents were susceptible to correction by other people and realized it was their duty to have their kids be well behaved.
Now being a parent at all makes one a saint and across the board people act like having children makes one above reproached and they can’t possinlebne in need of advice or correction by people who actually know better.
In 1989 or so child free wasnt a large scale concept. In part because the internet didn’t exist but also because people understood they had to integrate their kids into society not that society revolves around them or their whims.
What was basic wisdom in 1989-1997 or so gets you labeled as a criminal and monster now by so many people and I don’t get that at all. Thoughts?
