Layers yes or no

I have long wavy hair and i never style it and always braid it. I tried styling it the other day but it did not look good it lacked volume and was a little frizzy. I want to get layers to gain some volume but im scared it will give me split ends all over my hair and ruin my progress. Do you recommend getting layers?
