Local 601 apprenticeship?

Looking to either doing the steamfitters 601 HVAC route or IBEW 494 in my area. I currently work as an inspector for underground utility installs but hate being forced to be hands off. What’s the HVAC apprenticeship like? Any 601 or people here? Is pay bearable starting out? I’m at $27 now. I take aptitude tests for both locals in the coming months but not sure which I’d prefer. Any help is appreciated.
