Random 2–5s Black Screen (Audio Continues) – Happens in Minecraft + Modrinth Launcher

Troubleshooting

Hey everyone,

I’m trying to figure out an intermittent screen flicker issue that only happens in Minecraft Java (launched through Modrinth) and on the Modrinth launcher home page.

It does NOT happen in Fortnite or other games. And has only developed in the course of a few days.

What happens: • Screen briefly flickers black for a split second to a few seconds. • Sometimes there’s a thin white horizontal line right before it or just randomly • It instantly comes back (there is no “No Signal” message). • No crash. • No FPS drop. • No artifacts in other games.

When it happens: • Sometimes once every 30–45 minutes. • Sometimes several times within a short span. • Completely random.

System: • RTX 5070 • 1080p 144Hz Acer ED270R S (about 7–8 years old) • Connected via certified HDMI 2.1 cable • Windows 11 • Minecraft Java (running on Zulu JRE via Modrinth)

Mods / Shaders: • Running Fabric mods via Modrinth. • I do have shader support installed (Iris), but no shader pack is currently enabled. • Issue also occurs on the Modrinth launcher home page (not just in-game).

Important detail:

It also flickers on the Modrinth home page (where it shows instances), not just inside the game.

Other games (DX12 like Fortnite) are completely stable.

Things I’ve tried: • Clean NVIDIA driver reinstall • Fullscreen exclusive mode in Minecraft • VSync on/off (both driver and in-game) • Shader cache unlimited • Disabled NVIDIA overlay • Toggled Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling • Restarted multiple times • Temps are normal

It never shows “No Signal” and doesn’t happen outside of Minecraft/Modrinth.

What I’m trying to figure out:

Does this sound more like: • OpenGL / Java presentation issue? • NVIDIA driver quirk? • HDMI timing issue with older 144Hz monitor? • Something else?

I’ve racked my brain for hours and played around with settings, and tried everything I can think of and nothing has helped. So any input is greatly appreciated.
