Calling the IITM BS degree a scam or something that should not be defended is an overstatement, even though some of the frustrations being raised are understandable. The program is offered directly by the Indian Institute of Technology Madras, approved by its Senate, and the final degree is issued by IIT Madras itself. That alone means it is an officially recognized IIT degree, not a private franchise or affiliate certification. Complaints about provisional certificate formatting do not change the academic validity of the final awarded degree unless there is formal documentation showing a downgrade in status, which has not been produced.

The removal of the ability to repeat previous-level courses is a policy tightening. Early batches reportedly had more flexibility, which could allow grade optimization. Restricting that reduces grade inflation and increases rigor. Many traditional IIT programs do not permit repeated grade improvements either. Making the degree harder does not make it worse; if anything, it increases academic seriousness, even though it makes CGPA management tougher.

The claim about ₹100+ crore sitting as cash and RTI responses needs proper financial documentation before drawing conclusions. IITs are autonomous public institutions, and large online programs naturally generate significant revenue because of scale. Revenue surplus is not proof of misconduct unless there is audited evidence of misuse. Without official audit findings or regulatory action, this remains suspicion rather than established fact.

Lecture quality and refresh rate are a fair area for criticism. Some recordings may not be updated frequently. However, academic quality is determined by curriculum design, assessments, proctored exams, and projects—not just video production. Many IIT courses reuse lectures for multiple years. That is an improvement area, not evidence of academic fraud.

The argument that Management and Data Science have nothing to do with each other is inaccurate. Data-driven decision-making, business analytics, operations research, financial modeling, and managerial analytics are globally recognized intersections. Launching additional BS programs may reflect expansion strategy, but academically the combination is defensible. Expansion does not automatically mean dilution.

The concern about IIT MTech eligibility is more nuanced. IIT admissions are department-specific and often require a four-year engineering degree with certain core credits. A BS degree is not automatically identical to a BTech. If a department requires specific engineering coursework and a candidate lacks those credits, rejection follows eligibility rules, not prejudice. Some departments may accept it; others may not. That reflects criteria alignment issues, not universal rejection or illegitimacy.

Low pass rates such as 37% or 43% in certain courses indicate high rigor and filtration. The first batch having around 1–2% completion rate reflects open entry followed by strict academic screening. That makes the program harsh, but harsh grading does not equal scam. It actually suggests tightening standards rather than dilution.

The fee increase from roughly 3.5 lakh to 4.5 lakh is real. However, 4.5 lakh total over several years remains significantly below many private engineering colleges charging two to four times that amount. Fee hikes deserve transparency and justification, but relative to the Indian higher education market, it is not extraordinary.

A Reddit thread claiming some students could not perform basic EDA is anecdotal. In any large open-entry program with diverse backgrounds, skill variance will be high. Isolated examples cannot define the entire academic standard of thousands of students.

Placement data is the most sensitive area. If TA roles are counted alongside job placements, or if internships are highlighted heavily, clarity in reporting is important. A 6 LPA median is modest compared to IIT BTech medians, but it is not zero and is comparable to many tier-2 institutions. Single-digit placement counts per term sound alarming without knowing the exact graduating cohort size for that term. The program is only a few years into producing graduates, and employer ecosystems take time to mature. Marketing framing can be criticized if overly optimistic, but that is different from proving data falsification.

The claim that off-campus placements are unrealistic ignores that off-campus hiring is difficult for everyone, including IIT BTech students. Difficulty does not equal impossibility. Outcomes depend heavily on individual skill, portfolio, internships, and networking. The degree alone will not guarantee elite jobs; that is true for most degrees today.

Similarly, assuming foreign universities will automatically reject the degree is speculative. International admissions committees evaluate transcripts, rigor, research output, recommendation letters, and projects. They do not base decisions on Indian social media narratives. Recognition issues within some IIT MTech programs reflect eligibility structures, not global invalidation.

In summary, there are legitimate concerns: placement transparency, clearer communication about eligibility for certain postgraduate programs, and continuous content improvement. Those deserve constructive pressure. But calling the program a scam ignores that it is a Senate-approved IIT Madras degree, academically rigorous with high filtration, and officially awarded by IITM. It is not equivalent to an IIT BTech in outcomes, and it should not be marketed as such. It is also not fraudulent or fake.

Criticism should focus on measurable reforms and accountability. Blanket dismissal is emotionally satisfying but analytically weak.
