My experience
So I graduated college last May with an environmental science degree. I had a a few different job offers and suddenly this surveying job I applied for reached out after I applied a few months prior and asked for an interview. Through college I worked as an equipment manager on a fleet that was worth around $900,000-$1,000,000 and worked 7 days a week most of the time so instantly the 4-10s stood out.
I’ve been here 8 months now, and the company I work for solely works in land conservation. So my first ever project was a 900 acre boundary in the mountains running it traditional. I knew absolutely nothing about surveying so I was a little surprised when I wasn’t on the side of a highway. Since then I’ve done about 5 different as built topos and that definitely gets monotonous but i still enjoy them. Ive set control points, stakes and set CE points, and other simple stuff between big projects. It does get boring at times but really I just want to know what the next steps would be in the coming years if I stick with this, which I fully intend to.
What would you guys recommend my next step should be after I hit the one year mark? Is there certifications or something I should keep an eye out for as far as moving to a different company or sector of surveying ? Just curious, I love the company and the kind of work we do, even on the boring days. How different is the construction or DOT route?
TIA!
