Allergic Eye Mystery
For about five years, I’ve dealt with disruptive eye symptoms. Spontaneous burning, itching, redness, tearing, and sharp pain. While this is worse outside and between March and November, it occurs year round as well as inside. I can be outside for hours on a high pollen day and be fine on some days. I don’t feel safe driving because I can be temporarily blinded, unable to open my eyes when this occurs. Washing my eyes with water offers some relief. Given my issues largely disappear when I’m not on the east coast, I am certain there is an environmental factor.
I was on shots while these symptoms worsened yet my other allergy symptoms improved. I take Xyzal, Dymista, and Singulair daily. I’ve tried Patady at all strengths, Zaditor, and Sodium Cromolyn drops with limited improvement. My allergists have largely been unhelpful, saying they’ve done everything they can except restarting allergy immunotherapy which I stopped in mid 2024 (started 2021). My ophthalmologist says I have blepharitis and treated me with two weeks of tobradex and a month of doxy along with starting Restasis. I had to add back in Pataday extra strength after stopping tobradex because my symptoms were unbearable. The 3+ times a day of warm compresses feels like a waste of time.
What is going on with me? What kind of doctor or treatment can help?
