question about nalini’s amma

so I’m currently re-watching never have I ever and I am on season 2 episode 2 where nalini goes back to India to “set things up” before their move. however, I’m noticing something really weird with nalini‘s mom‘s accent. i feel like it’s not really indian? it’s more of british/aussie/american but i’m not sure. was this done on purpose or was this just her messing up an actual indian accent? The reason why I’m asking is because I am also Tamil, and my grandparents have an accent similar to nalini’s and not at all her mom.
