Revisiting here probably the most iconic of Zaha Hadid (RIP) works.

The Heydar Aliyev Center in Baku as inaugurated in 2012 and is an example of architecture made possible through advanced engineering. Designed by Zaha Hadid Architects with structural engineering by AKT II, the building abandons conventional vertical and horizontal divisions in favor of a continuous surface that blends ground, wall, and roof.

The fluid geometry relies on a hybrid structural system combining reinforced concrete cores with a three-dimensional steel space frame, allowing long spans, deep cantilevers, and large column-free interiors. Structural transitions and expansion joints are absorbed into the folds of the architecture, maintaining visual continuity while accommodating movement and load transfer.

The envelope is composed of thousands of individually fabricated GFRC and GFRP panels, each derived from coordinated digital models aligning structure, skin, and geometry. Inside, structure becomes almost invisible, allowing space to flow without interruption. The project shows how organic form emerges not from arbitrariness, but from tightly coordinated architectural and engineering logic.
