Combat patrol tips against Thousand Sons

Hey guys, a buddy and I recently picked up the hobby and started playing combat patrol games against each other (till we have enough points to start playing the proper modes). I am looking for tips to counter the thousand sons combat patrol.

Aside from semi suiciding my death riders and death korps and keeping my commander squad en heavy guns all the way in the back. His rubrics eradicate anything that even gets semi close… Should i fully focus on scoring points? I am familiar with all rules but just no experienced enough to know what is smart to focus on!
