My (M26) Ex (M25) says he loves me but feels numb and isn't in love with me over past issue. How do we fix this?

Me and my ex were best friends for a few years.

We really fell in love while I was in the Marines, and it was a long distance relationship. I drunkenly flirted one night, and later confessed to him.

We were together for about a year until I discovered he sent a lewd picture to a mutual friend. I was devastated but I chose to stay with him.

I was upset, and I know I did hurt him when I found out because I was very harsh in the way I asked him for more information on what happened and why.

We moved past the issue, and sometimes brought it up but I dont believe we ever really solved the core issues because a year and a half later, he says he loves me but feels detached.

He says he feels a numbness towards me, the same he feels towards his abusive mother because of how I got upset at him and he repressed the issue for a long time and he admits he wasn't good at communicating.

We had a "last date" and spent 5 days with each other over valentines. He cried and I cried so much, and he said he loved me, but he couldn't feel it in his heart.

He still says he cares, and every time I've pushed him away or tried to go no contact he still is there and being kind to me, saying he wants to try again later and hopes the feeling of love comes back with me. I'm worried that I will annoy him or he will get tired of me.

He says I have some issues to work on and so does he.

We spoke and I plan to see him again soon, not as lovers but just to spend time with each other because we miss each other. I do have a hope we can move forward as lovers again though.

I really don't know what to do. I want to cling to this with every hope because I usually just run from my ex's and never talk to them again.
