Why scaling my apparel startup forced me to rethink production entirely
When I first started my apparel project, I thought growth would mostly depend on better designs and stronger marketing.
But as orders slowly started coming in, I realized something uncomfortable, production consistency was the real bottleneck.
In the early days, I kept runs small to protect cash flow. That helped reduce risk, but it introduced new problems:
• Slight fit variations between batches
• Stitching inconsistencies in high-stress areas
• Small differences in label placement and finishing
• Difficulty maintaining the same “feel” across restocks
None of these issues were dramatic on their own. But together, they affected how trustworthy and polished the brand felt.
Then there’s the inventory dilemma.
Order too much and you’re stuck with dead stock.
Order too little and you can’t capitalize when something actually starts moving.
Balancing flexibility with consistency has been harder than I expected. I’ve realized apparel isn’t just about creating something that looks good, it’s about building a production system that protects both quality and cash flow.
For those further along in your startup journey:
How did you approach early production decisions?
Did you prioritize small controlled runs or scale early for consistency?
What operational shift made the biggest difference for you?
Would genuinely appreciate insights from founders who’ve worked through this phase.
