Nene's biggest strength and biggest flaw, her optimism (spoilers for chapter 127)
Nene's optimism is a major strength for her because it is a big factor in her resilience. Nene is able to be resilient in the face of her impending death at the end of Picture Perfect because she's optimistic that she can find a way to survive a live a long life as seen in chapter 57: "So what if I don't have long to live!!? I... I have plans to plant some new summer vegetables next year! When I'm done studying for entrance exams, I'm going to make my debut as a stunning college coed!" Nene is able to live a happier life because of this optimism. Since she views everything as working out in the end, she's less anxious. In chapters 123 to 126, Nene's determination and optimism that she would be able to solve the problem of her friends dying worked out for her since she was able to save the friend able to bring her back in time and change the timeline to one where her friends don't die (despite my doubts about Akane's intentions, I believe he intends to change the timeline to one where Nene's friends aren't all dead). If Nene hadn't been so optimistic, she would have turned back after one of kitty's many warnings. But she didn't and that was how she was able to make things right.
However, Nene's optimism is also a major flaw of hers. She gives everyone the benefit of the doubt. She's optimistic that Hanako won't do more crazy things to save her lifespan without consulting her first despite him doing just that time and time again. She falls for many tricks and traps because she's too optimistic for things not to be a trap. When Hanako hints that something's up with Aoi in chapter 64 by asking Aoi, "Did you manage to get away all on your own? From No. 6?" Nene doesn't notice the hint that something's up with what Aoi's saying. And so she falls into a pit of bugs. She constantly ignores red flags that something's up no matter how blatant they are leading to a lot a stupid decisions. For example, swallowing a scale she was told not to swallow in the very first chapter.
Even now in the story Nene ignores red flags. Chapter 127 is filled with suspicious things and while I'm sure some are plot holes, it's unlikely that all are plot holes. Or maybe I'm just too optimistic about Iro's writing here.
- Akane's flashback of Nene refers to, "Kako-san," even though Nene calls him, "Mr. Clock Keeper."
- Akane claimed Nene saved him from the house even though victims of the red house can't disobey its will.
- Akane says, "If we do manage to change the world back to the way it was and the school festival disaster comes up again we might end up having to repeat this whole cycle. I have to jump back to a different time, so I can stop that from happening." This makes no sense given how time travel in tbhk works. It would make much more sense for Akane to just go back in time to the Clock Keepers and get them to stop, then go forward in time to the time prior to the festival to fix things. Also, Akane never mentioned needing someone else to go back in time to do part of the task before when discussing changing the timeline.
- Despite Akane's flashback only including Nene telling him that the change was made on Hanako's fourth birthday, Akane knows the exact date of Amane's birthday. If he learned the information from Nene only, then how does he know the date?
- Akane focuses on the change being about Amane's past when previously he had only been focused on the change being about Tsukasa. Since Amane and Tsukasa look almost identical, Akane should've realized that they're twins, so why focus on Amane's birthday?
- While readying the clock to send Nene off, Akane says, "If you had my watch and key I thought the other Clock Keepers would be willing to help, even if I wasn't there personally but I guess they're more stubborn than I thought. I'm sorry." So if Akane believes at the time of chapter 127 that the other Clock Keepers would only listen to him regarding changing the past and not listen to someone he sent, why send Nene? Wouldn't he just be dooming her to fail?
- Akane continues to count down despite Nene's screams about how she's not ready yet. Why would he send her out to do such an important task when she isn't ready yet?
Nene questions none of this.
