Guangzhou is the holy land for rep enthusiasts, and after years of obsessing over bags from online albums and counting stitchings from magnified photos, I finally made the pilgrimage to our Mecca. This is my attempt to pull back the curtain and taking a little peek inside.

**DAY 1: Mensa Leather & Hardware Center**

My first stop was the Mensa Leather Market, Guangzhou's central hub for exotic and rare leathers. It’s not a typical first stop for tourists, but I visited primarily because I was meeting up with XM, a Trusted Seller (TS) well known for exotic Horse bags. Mensa is smaller and more specialized than

the infamous Baiyun Market — though "small" is a relative term in Guangzhou, where everything operates at an almost incomprehensible scale. It has six floors and the shops sell a range of items from bags to raw material, including full body crocodile hides, Horse hardware and Riri zippers. Most shops here cater to Horse, though you'll also find LV, CC, D, and LP represented.

Walking through Mensa felt surreal. Shelves filled with Himalayans in every style; Birkins and Pochettes in every color imaginable. I saw a rep of the Rouge Faubourg Birkin 20 and just had to take it home. Being able to physically touch and feel the leathers — to hold the bags rather than scrutinizing photos — was a completely different sensory experience. For me, it was almost existential. You learn a lot about your own tastes when you're face to face and seeing all the different variations in a symphony.

Most Horse bags at Mensa are semi-finished and unbranded. Hardware is often missing on the sangles. Depending on your preference, the shops will help you arrange for foil stamping and engraving for around 100–200 RMB.

**DAY 2: Baiyun World Leather Trading Center**

If Mensa is focused and intimate, then the Baiyun Market is its sprawling and chaotic cousin. It is made up of three floors of maze-like shops spread across several interconnected buildings — bags as far as the eye can see, plus rep jewelry, luggage, clothing, and home goods. I can probably spend a week here and still not go through all the shops. I know this because I got lost multiple times, went in circles, and seriously had a moment of genuine panic. The place is a freaking labyrinth.

The quality of the reps at Baiyun skews mid-tier, with the occasional shops that feel mid-to-high. Most bags appears to be made with domestic rather than imported leather. Seeing the endless options honesrly gave me newfound respect for the TS’s we rely on — the work of curating and finding specific bags while ensuring quality from a place this vast is no small feat.

One important caveat about buying at Baiyun: the most bags on display are unbranded, meaning you'll either have to return the next day to pick up your finished item, or have it delivered to your hotel. I have heard stories about switcheroos — the delivered bag ending up noticeably inferior to what you saw in the shop — so I tried to avoid that situation. I was able to limit myself to off-the-shelf purchases which also helped to keep the impulse buys in check. Unfortunately, I still got burned on a set of rep jewelry. The earrings delivered to my hotel were not exactly what I saw and ordered from the store, and since I was leaving the next morning, I had no way to exchange them. Lesson learned.

**Dinner with XM**

I've engaged with essentially every high-tier Horse TS known on Reddit, and XM is probably one of the more dynamic of the group. His Douyin livestream motto — *Once a Purchase, Forever Brothers* — makes you question if we are really dealing with women’s custom-made handbags. But it actually all makes sense when you spend time with him.

Visiting XM's shop at Mensa was a little like going to see the Wizard of Oz — it was kind of fantastical to see the staging area for his livestreams, the stock room full of bags — the whole operation laid bare. I am kind of proud of myself that I only walked out with two bags, though I’m still kicking myself for not grabbing the bubble gum lizard Pochette and the Noir Folie Elan clutch with those impossibly soft feathers. But I had two more jumbo bags from Baobao waiting for me in the hotel and my luggage situation was beyond critical.

Over dinner, XM talked about working his way up from a factory apprentice, learning the craft with the old-school leather artisans from Hong Kong. He now runs his own factory with over 30 employees, producing hundreds of bags a month for clients around the world. And yes, many of his clients are social media influencers. He won’t tell me who, but basically confirmed all the influencers use reps.

One thing that surprised me: XM said the Western Sisters disproportionately prefer veining and gold hardware. I had always assumed that veining was more of an Asian preference. Although I guess I do fit the stereotype as I am also a light veining and GHW girl.

The most profound moment of the evening came when we talked about the "soul" of a Horse bag. It sounds like an odd thing to say about a rep, but he meant it sincerely — and he's right. When it comes to the Horse brand, a deviation of a millimeter or two can ruin a bag. On the other hand, a few misaligned stitches, in the right context, can give it character. Getting it right is less manufacturing and more like transforming something inanimate and complex into life. It's an artistic process, and hearing a craftsman speak about it that way is what I believe separates a high-tier TS from the rest.

**Takeaways**

Seeing the reps in person was everything I hoped for — I felt like a kid with free rein in the Willy Wonka candy shop. But the most meaningful part of the trip wasn't the bags. It was the people.

XM’s sense of brotherhood came through loud and clear when he replaced a broken strap on a bag I bought from a reformer without hesitation. He recognized it was his bag from just a single photo, and stood behind it. Another TS, Frank, whom I wasn't able to meet this time, sent me tea sourced from a specific region in China because he remembered, from a conversation months ago, that my grandmother was from there. Baobao, with her characteristic precision, ensured my pre-ordered bags arrived at my hotel on exactly the day of my arrival — not too early to risk the hotel misplacing them, and not too late to ensure I can actually use them on my trip.

These details matter. They're not transactions — they're relationships.

On the day I visited the Mensa Market, I did a livestream from Mensa for the RT Discord, and we also held a Q&A with XM over dinner. Even though I was traveling alone, I did not feel alone. This community is built on a shared obsession, yes, but also on genuine trust, shared knowledge, and support. The TS's are very much a part of it, but I also wouldn't be the sophisticated buyer I am today without everything I've learned from others in the community.

Now I'm home, firmly relocated to ban island (!!!). At least until my next China trip. 😝
