Nissan Micra 2015 keeps refusing to throttle and shuts off randomly. Is it dying?
Let me preface this by saying I know very little about cars. Also, I've had this car since it came out 11 years ago and it's been a good soldier and it's survived my negligence. For example, it still has its original spark plugs. I know, don't scold me, I do better with my other car so please be gentle. ;)
Anyhow, back in December 2025, I had a flat tire and decided I would wait a bit to get it fixed because, where I'm from, winter tires are mandatory as of December 1st and garages are overbooked. So I used my other car and didn't get around to it until late January 2026. I went to the garage, came back home, everything was good. Now where I'm from, we have pretty cold winters and this one has been rough as of now. We've had temperatures going from around 0 °C to sometimes -30 °C with wind chills of nearly -45 °C.
So one day I take my car to the grocery store nearby. It's about a 5 minutes drive. Everything works fine. Given the temperature, I leave the car on idle for about 10 minutes while I'm inside. When I try to leave, I put it on the first gear but I'm getting no power. I'm stuck at less that 15 km/h. I stop the car, turn it off and turn it back on. Same thing. So, since I'm close to home, I try to make it back. Then, all of a sudden, all the lights on my dashboard, including the backlight for the temperature knobs, turn off. The radio is still playing but nothing is showing on the radio's LCD. The car slows to a stop. I can't turn it back on. I wait about 5 minutes and it turns back on and I'm able to drive normally back home.
I thought maybe it was a frozen gas line. So, I leave it until it's warmer. I try to go to the post office on Friday, which was a warmer day, and had no issues at all. So, yesterday, not a super cold day but colder than Friday, I try to go to the grocery store and, maybe 2 minutes after I'm out of my driveway, the no-power issue comes back, exactly the same. This time though, I wasn't far from home so I was luckily able to drive it back. Once in my driveway, I wanted to test if the issue happened when I was backing up but the car died right there and wouldn't start back up. I didn't go to check if it would be working again later.
It's a manual car.
What could be causing this? Last time this happened to one of my cars, the mechanics tried fixing a bunch of things because saying it could be the onboard computer which would be very expensive to replace just to hope that this was the issue. So, we got rid of the car and got another one. Could this be the issue also on my Micra?
Thank you!
