Is woodstoving really that polluting ?
Our town council wants to limit woodstoving only a few hours a day. Advocates of this rule claim that woodstoving to bad for the health of the neighborhood. Well, woodstoves do pollute with particulate matter (PM) and PAH. But this can be mitigated by, as we all know, seasoned wood with < 20% moisture, regular chimney sweep and a hot clean burn. No smoldering or choking. The window is a good indicator of a proper burn, when it gets dirty, the same crud leaves the chimney. I am more for stricter rules (even if that means I have to upgrade to a catalytic stove), just like for cars, a woodstove should meet minimum emission guidelines. The town council 'forgets' that the zillion cars pollute more than the few woodstoves in our council.
