New to Photography, Looking for a Beginner Camera Around $500–$600 Any Suggestions?

Discussion

Hey everyone! 👋

I’m just getting into photography and I’m ready to buy my first camera. I have a budget of $500–$600 USD (can be new or lightly used/re-furbished). I’m not sure what to look for yet most important to me is something that’s easy for a beginner, but still good quality for photos and video so I can learn and grow.

A few questions I’d love help with:
• What camera would you recommend in this price range?
• Should I get a mirrorless, DSLR, or something else?
• Any specific lenses I should consider?
• Any brands/models that are especially good for learning?

My interests are casual photography (travel, family, street) and some video for social media. I’ve heard Sony, Canon, and Nikon are good but I don’t really know what to choose.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions really appreciate your help!

TLDR:

Budget: $500–$600 (USD)
Country: Canada
Condition: New or used (open to refurbished)
Type of Camera: Mirrorless or DSLR (beginner not sure which is best)
Intended use: Mostly photography, some video
If photography; what style: Travel, street, family, everyday life
If video what style: Casual social media videos (maybe YouTube later)
What features do you absolutely need: Beginner-friendly, good image quality, decent autofocus, interchangeable lenses
Portability: Prefer not too bulky, but doesn’t need to be pocket-sized
Cameras you're considering: N/A
Cameras you already have: N/A
Notes: I’m totally new and want something I can learn on and grow with. I’m fine buying used to get better value.
