Confused about Airsoft & Paintball Laws

I'm confused because I know there is no way you can have an airsoft gun or paintball gun or any air powered firearm in NYC, yet they have paintball stores where you can buy ammo and maybe an actual gun there (thinking stingray divers and paintball). How is that legal?
