AITAH for not taking my cat out of the litter box?
So I (24F) live with my boyfriend (24M) of 7 years and our cat that we got in July, so we’ve only had him for about 7ish months. We’re both first time cat owners. For some back story, my bf has been going through a lot in terms of some family problems and overall direction in life. Last night we went out to dinner with his dad and at the end they got into a pretty big fight so he was upset when we got home. He also picked up a shift to work at 5am the next day (this morning) so when we got home at like 7:30 after dinner he just went to bed. I offered support if he wanted to talk or that I could lay with him, but he said no.
Now our cat is like 1.5 years old so he still has a lot of energy and is very playful, especially at night with the night time zoomies. So he was meowing and scratching his post, and it was only like 8:30 at this point which is typical for him. We usually do not go to bed at 7:30 so he still was in his like active hours. But I could hear bf tossing and turning and getting annoyed at the sound. We live in a 1 bedroom 1 bathroom apartment so it’s not super big. I played with the cat for a while to try to get some energy out. But then around 9/9:30ish, he was in his litter box which is in our bathroom that connects to our bedroom. He was digging around for a few minutes, and then I hear bf yell like “come on!!” Out of frustration. Sometimes the cat will dig a little excessively and the scratching in the litter is kinda loud. So I went in the bathroom and tried to gently encourage him to get out because I think he had already pooped or peed but I wasn’t sure. He kept digging and digging and I was growing increasingly anxious because I knew bf was getting more upset. I could hear him saying things like “yeah getting a cat was a great idea” and “guess I’ll just fucking stay up at this point”. The cat is still digging at this point but I am apprehensive so just take him out of the litter box because I know this is an instinctual thing for cats. You know like with dogs and their food, I thought it’s one of those things you don’t interrupt. And it’s good that I didn’t move him because he ended up peeing , and then had to dig to cover that up. The cat doesn’t do this every time, I think maybe if the litter is more dirty or he feels like he can’t cover the scent. I hadn’t cleaned it yet that day so I’m thinking that’s why, but I usually do clean it once a day in the evening.
So then I go in the bedroom and explain that he peed and he’s covering that up now. And bf is pissed saying stuff like “just move the fucking cat” and “I’m just not gonna get any fucking sleep” but again, it felt wrong to do. Also when we first got the cat the only time he ever hissed at me was when I walked into the bathroom while he was using the litter box. He has never hissed at me again (I think because we were still new to each other) but I took that as a sign that it’s not something you mess with. Like it’s their instinct and bodily functions I don’t know.
Then this morning he came home from work and he’s pissed at me saying “no one in my life cares about me, my dad doesn’t, you prioritize the cat, the only place i actually feel appreciated is at work” and I’m like ???? Whenever we argue he makes big statements like this that confuse me, because we’ve been doing really well we just had a super fun night together the previous night. I’m just so confused. He thinks I let the cat “rule the house” and “treat him like a king.” I said these are pretty big statements and we should probably talk about them to work it out because I didn’t know he was feeling this way, but he’s mad and said she doesn’t want to talk.
I know that he’s going through stuff with his family… but my instinct is telling me that he’s being kind of unreasonable with this. I don’t know what do you all think, AITAH?
