Update: Did my PI use AI on my rough draft?

Seeking advice-academic

Reposting with fewer identifying details because the original got more attention than expected, and I worried about it getting back to my lab. I’ve included an update, but I still welcome advice and discussion.

I am working on a rough draft to send to my PI. I sent it to them, and then sent back a version that appeared to be edited by AI. I put it through an AI detector, and it came back as 100% AI. I put my original draft through and it came back as 0% AI.

Some users rightly pointed out that these detectors can be faulty. Others pointed out that confronting PI with AI use is not going to be a fruitful conversation.

I think the main issue for me is this: I would have liked my PI to have given me the feedback that they took the time to type into AI (allegedly).

Update:

Based on the helpful comments from users, here is my plan moving forward:

  1. Take new draft and incorporate changes into my old draft, retaining stronger writing and human voice. Then send to them with suggestions, comments, questions.

  2. Make sure PI is aware of any AI rules for submission.

  3. Be willing to accept PI’s final call.

  4. In the future, have a conversation with PI about writing and editing process and what kind of feedback could be helpful vs what kind of feedback they have time to give. Try to meet in the middle.
