Incorrect pattern or me being stupid???

I recently bought a pattern for a top online, and I am doing the bottom part, which is like lace flowers. I'm so confused because no matter how I try to do it, it just does not seem right. I am sort of a beginner at crochet, but I have made clothing items before.

Row 1: Ch 3 (this counts as 1st st),*dc 1 in next st, ch 3, sk 3 st, sc 1 in the next 5 st, ch 3,sk 3 st, dc 1 in the next 2 st*, repeat from *to* until the end of the row, turn.

Row 2: Ch 3 (this counts as 1st st),*dc 3 in next ch-space, ch 3, sk 3 st, sc 1 in the next 3sc, ch 3, sk 3 st, dc 3 in next ch space**, ch 1*, repeat from *to* until you have 1 st left,ending last repeat at **, dc 1 in the last st, turn.

I have put in bold what im confused about. How can I skip 3 and then sc into 3 if i only did 5 sc in the first place?? The math just doesnt make sense?!! This is probably very confusing but i dont know if its my error or an error in the pattern
