Is there a parry limit?

so i was fighting the dead end butcher, he did a 3 hit attack, i parried with Anby,,,once, twice and thrice. after that screen went black and white, anby dropped on one knee and i couldn't counter attack. now after that it happend again but this time is switched to Nicole, which did 3 more parry and same thing happened, so in last resort i changed to billy. now the last part isn't important but...we can only parry 3 times wihch one character? (and yes, i too saw a 7 consecutive attack in zzz for the first time)
