What are signs my golden is nearing the end of life?
Golden Retrievers typically live between 10–12 years, and as they enter their final stage, there are some key signs to watch for:
Loss of appetite — They may stop eating or show little interest in food they once loved.
Extreme fatigue — Sleeping far more than usual, barely getting up even for walks.
Difficulty breathing — Labored or irregular breathing, especially at night.
Loss of bladder/bowel control — Accidents becoming more frequent even in house-trained dogs.
Withdrawal — They may isolate themselves, avoid interaction, or seem emotionally distant.
Chronic pain — Limping, whimpering, or struggling to get comfortable.
If your golden is showing multiple of these signs together, it's worth having an honest conversation with your vet about quality of life. This guide goes much deeper into each of these signs and also helps you understand what to do next and how to make their final days as comfortable as possible.
