Slow weight gain, top ups, advice needed.

Support Needed

Hi all, really struggling and don’t know where to turn for support.

Baby is nearly 10 weeks old and we’ve struggled with slow weight gain since he was born. He took nearly 4 weeks to return to birth weight after being on a triple feeding plan (which plummeted my mental health). He would spend a long time at the breast but quickly fall asleep. I completely stopped pumping once he was gaining, but this has still been really slow. I find myself obsessing over whether he’s getting enough. Too add into this I got mastitis in my left breast and he pretty much refuses this side. I keep trying, but he’ll spend about 5 mins popping on and off again. He’s in the 1st percentile.

Since he had his jabs on Weds, he has started feeding less (almost half the time he was before) and getting frustrated, pulling on me/popping on and off or staying on for a long time then falling asleep. Ive had to start pumping again and topping him up and he guzzles whatever is given, crying when it’s finished. I’m getting less than I was before at 4 weeks PP. I find myself worrying about his nappies, whether they’d be classed as heavy and whether when he falls asleep he’s just giving up and he’s hungry.

The health visitor has referred us for tongue and and lip tie. Our appointment is on Weds but I don’t know how much longer I can go on like this. His latch is quite shallow (in comparison to my older two children) and he’s constantly readjusting himself. He does tend to do this on the bottle too.

I desperately want to breastfeed, but I just feel like he’s making the decision for me and my supply is plummeting because I’m not finding as much time to pump after feeds because he spends so long suckling and then I’m topping up.

Help!
