Watched Season 1 of Westworld again and was struck by how much it reminds me of the Course. If you haven't seen the show, on the surface it is about an elitist amusement park created to look just like the "old west" and populated by sophisticated AI robots that on the surface are indiscernible from humans, called "hosts". At a deeper level, it is a deeply philosophical look at what it means to be human in this world.

The park that the hosts inhabit is very real to them, but it isn't the "real world," it's just a carefully crafted illusion. And nothing that happens in the park really happens to the hosts, even though the hosts experience it as real, because they are not the bodies that they inhabit. Their bodies can be killed or even destroyed, but their bodies are repairable and even replaceable. They die thousands of times, and they wake up the next morning as if nothing happened, and start their day again, following the same path, with some variations. Like "Groundhog Day" except they do not remember what happened the day before. The times that they are "awake" in the "real world," the place where their bodies are repaired or rebuilt, they experience as a "dream." Each of the hosts are given a "back story" that involves serious trauma, and ongoing pain that they experience and that drives their character. So their pain is just a story from the past that creates guilt in them that isn't real either.

One of the core concepts in the first season is what they call "the maze," which is a hierarchical map of consciousness/spiritual journey that was created by the original "creator" of the hosts. It's a journey inward that starts with Memory, then moves to Improvisation, and then to Self-Interest. This last step is the one the oldest and most experienced of the hosts start to experience, and is referred-to as listening to an "inner voice." This is where the show slightly departs from ACIM because the show calls listening to this "inner voice" listening to their OWN inner voice, where ACIM would call this listening to Holy Spirit. This difference could be because the show didn't want to inject what would be perceived as "religion" into the show, but the effect is the same. When listening to the "inner voice" the hosts are considered "conscious," "alive" and "sentient."

So it's a fascinating show to watch, and see these "hosts" who have lived thousands of lives in the same "loop," start to remember those lives, and realize that the world they inhabit is not the "real world," but a carefully crafted illusion whose ultimate goal is to wake them up. A place that turns out to be one where they are doing the same things over and over. A prison for their minds. It begs a very important question of how we are just like these "hosts" in awakening to the unreality of their world after so many lives lived.

There is a fascinating human character in the show called the "Man in Black." Although he has the same name as the sorcerer in Stephen King's Dark Tower series, the only similarity is that they are both on a journey to the center of the illusory world they inhabit. In Westworld, the Man in Black represents the ego. A billionaire who can be, do or have anything, but chooses to spend all his time in the park because he believes it is "more real" than the real world. He indulges all manner of depraved actions, which are ironically in the name of finding the center of "the maze," which as noted above is hearing that internal voice/Holy Spirit.

Because the backdrop to these awakenings is the "old west," where a LOT of violence takes place, this show isn't for everyone, but ACIM students will likely enjoy it and see many parallels to the Course teachings.

Westworld - another show that reminds me of ACIM's teachings
