I am so torn on fan response to the ending here
I have such confused feelings.
First of all, I adored the ending of JJK and defend it to this day. It was very appropriate for the story GeGe was telling, which was a story about stopping the 2 big bads. So much of the stuff it was “supposed to cover but didn’t” was stuff I barely thought about while reading, and I can only assume it was the classic effect of fans discussing the media so much that they wind up having an experience unplanned for by the author, spending huge time focusing on things they would spend little time thinking about on a blind binge like mine. JJK had a flawed narrative, but most issues were in the culling games, not the wrap up at the end.
Now JJK Modulo. First, I have so many issues with the fan response. On one hand they are judging very early, and doing so in that way I hate, where so much of it turns into aggression towards the author on the cruel end and just a lot of very unproductive shallow critique on the other. Not to mention a lot of the complaints are just wrong? It’s been pointed out plenty how much of what is happening isn’t because of Maru’s Harmony, but also due to idle transfiguration and Yuta’s ring, which a lot of people don’t seem to get, and there’s a lot of inability to meet the story on its own terms, to accept, for example, Dabura not finishing his battle might have been Gege trying to do something artsy - an interesting but poorly considered idea rather than a simple act of idiocy.
But despite how shallow the critiques are, I can’t help but feel they are attempts at explaining what is a very real disappointment in execution here. The pacing has been sloppy in this last chapter, and ending an interesting moral conflict in such a harmonious way is a real let down for me too.
I guess I want to join in on critiques, but I feel they are all wrapped up in a strange meta narrative about how GeGe is incapable of every delivering on a story’s finale and a big group-hate which I just so t personally relate to. I feel like a defender of this ending relative to the average commenter despite being critical of it. It’s so weird.
